Vodou automatically freezes a background tab once it's sat idle for more than 15 minutes — its JavaScript and timers pause, but the page stays loaded, so switching back to it resumes instantly with your place, scroll position, and page state exactly as you left it. This is fully automatic; there's no setting to turn it off or adjust the timing.
What's left alone
A tab playing audio, downloading, using WebRTC, or recently interacted with is kept active regardless of how long it's been in the background — Vodou defers to the rendering engine's own judgment of what's still unsafe to freeze. Pinned tabs, and any tab that hasn't actually loaded yet (for example one restored after a crash, deferred until you switch to it), are left alone too.
No more "discard" tier
Earlier versions of Vodou also offered a heavier discard tier — unloading a background tab completely, so switching back triggered a full reload — on a configurable timer (5/10/30/60 minutes, or Never). That extra setting added a choice most people never needed to make, so it's gone: every background tab is now simply frozen after 15 minutes, automatically, with nothing to configure.
